most popular EVENT
9/27-9/29 2024!!!
Deadline to sign up is Friday September 13 th. After 9/13, only those signed up will receive email updates for this outing.
Each year in September, at Triple Tree Aerodrome, there is a fly-in with hundreds of planes from around the country. This is a perfect family camping opportunity, and I encourage you to bring the whole family. While the Scouts are taking care of their Scouting responsibilities, you can roam around and look at airplanes, fish, hike, swim or nap.
The cost per person is $30 per person for two nights of camping. ($15/night)
We will plan to meet at the church on Friday, September 27rd to caravan down to Triple Tree Aerodrome near Woodruff SC. It is approximately 1.5 hour drive.
What is the Triple Tree Fly-In?
According to the Triple Tree Aerodrome, "Our 2021 Triple Tree Fly-In had a record of 1,349 total aircraft operations, making us the busiest airport in the State of South Carolina (during that week) and one of the fastest growing Fly-Ins in the United States.
After 15 years, we have grown to be one of the can’t-miss events on everyone’s calendar, but we have also held true to our core values of Fun, Fellowship, and Hospitality. "
What do SCOUTS do there?
The Asheville Boy Scout Troop 91 scouts tent camp for 2 nights under the stars near the end of one of the longest grass runways in the United States. This affords unparalleled access and viewing to hundreds of aircraft taking off and landing for 3 days straight (the full fly-in event is 1-week long. See the videos at the bottom of the page) During the day, scouts can walk among and see, up close, hundreds of private aircraft, warbirds, vintage aircraft, and some helicopters. There is a real flightline, and daily flight operations. There are also a couple of flight simulators, a gift shop (tent), and some food vendors. Morning reveille is courtesy of a classic 1940's era Mustang fighter bomber buzzing the entire airfield waking everyone up. We often have pilots that are willing to give their first airplane rides for those scouts who are interested in flying, free of charge as part of the EA Young Eagles program. Besides tons of planes, there are many opportunities for advancements, like cooking, camping, first-aid, and more. We also work specifically on the Aviation Merit Badge. The Troop volunteers for the event so about 1.5 -3 hrs/ weekend can be earned toward your advancements.
Can Family come?
Absolutely yes, it's encouraged. There is something for everyone. This is a tent camping event only. There are bathrooms and nice shower houses. If you have a camper, you have to make a separate reservation and camp at a specified campsite. Camping is quite expensive and spots go quickly.
